When It Hurts

There is no life that’s absent pain

Sometimes it hurts, then hurts again

But such is a necessity

Because of our mortality

We connect, we break, we love, we lose

What matters most is how we choose

To meet the pain that comes with living

Do we clam up or keep on giving?

It’s easy to just turn inside

To use our wounded heart to hide

Away from light and life and love

And every good gift from above

Thinking we can guard our soul

Yet doing this won’t make us whole

To gain the prize, we risk the fall

We chance the loss to gain it all

For with the light comes darkness, too

But the opposite is also true.
